The Rundown: The most powerful people in the country gather for a competition to determine who will rule.

The sheriff of the small town of Oak Valley is preparing to make his way out of town. After making a final stop at a gas station at the edge of the town, he leaves the clerk a letter to give to someone special before a final meeting with a man who sends him on his way with more money than he could imagine as the town is shut off from the rest of the country.
At the same time, a mysterious woman pays a visit to an ex-military hero who has fallen on hard times to recruit him to act as her champion in a deadly game where the richest people in the country send killers to a small town to hunt each other and the winner rules everything. As she tries to convince him to be her champion, the others gather to watch as their own champions descend on Oak Valley to play a dangerous and deadly game.
The Story: Tynion crafts a dark, thrilling and entertaining story in this first issue. I love that Tynion has the freedom to build the world of this story while also introducing the characters, conflicts and history and I appreciate how that freedom allows the plot to engage the reader. I am excited for this story and look forward to seeing what happens next.
The Art: Walsh delivers beautiful art throughout the issue. The human story is beautifully detailed and the introduction of the killers looks delightfully scary.
